AUGUST 2010

“...distilled dew and honey with the fragrance of all the fresh wild flowers of the field greeting the dawn.”
André Simon (1877 – 1970)
On Château d’Yquem

The Farm

The farm was part of Simon van der Stel’s original Constantia farm, in 1773 a 200 acre portion was sub divided and sold to Cornelus Brink; this was known as Nova Constantia.

Buitenverwachting came into being when Arend Brink bought the farm in 1794 built a manor house and started planting vines. During the past two centuries Buitenverwachting has had no less than 16 owners with huge swings in fortune.

When German businessman Richard Mueller and his wife bought the farm in 1981, stability and a change in fortune came to Buitenverwachting. The farm has been under the management of son Lars Maack over the past few years and this magnificent Estate has truly flourished, producing outstanding wines which can be tasted at a welcoming Tasting Room and includes an excellent restaurant.

Living up to its name; Buitenverwachting – Beyond Expectation!

Hot News

Lars decided 5 years ago that it was time for Buitenverwachting to produce a fine Grappa and some delightful Schnapps. He went in search of a really good distiller and found Joerg Saupp in the small town of Hagnau on the banks of the beautiful Lake Constance. The Saupp family are renowned for their superb distillery products.

Joerg agreed to come to South Africa to supervise the making of the Buitenverwachting Grappa and Schnapps. The results are now available at the Farm and are outstanding. So far Digestivo I (Sauvignon Blanc) has been released with Digestivo III (William) to be released soon. Lars says “we needed a nice Grappa to satisfy the demand for fine wines and spirits that has been developing in South Africa.”

In his inimitable way he has produced a spirit that is ‘beyond expectation’.

Well done to Lars and Joerg!

The Restaurant is closed for the month of August. It re-opens on Saturday 4th September for lunch and dinner; the delicious Nuptials Menu (link) and all the great value Winter Specials (link) which will run until the end of October.

The team take a holiday and the Restaurant gets some maintenance and a ‘nip and a tuck’...

Those of us that visited in July will have seen that the carpets have been lifted and beautiful wooden floors have been laid. Underfloor heating keeps us nice and warm on chilly days and the newly refurbished lounge is looking fabulous with some really great new artwork.

The first official function at Buitenverwachting Restaurant this season is the hosting of The Thursday Club’s annual fundraising luncheon on the 2nd September.

Guest speaker is Pieter-Dirk Uys, South Africa’s most famous political satirist and entertainer; inexhaustible, this beloved son of South Africa never stops to catch a breath. He campaigns endlessly for the education of children; he spreads the word about the horrendous pandemic of HIV/AIDS. He gives sparkling performances regularly. An Australian journalist said of him  “Uys is a performer whose instinct for the killer observation, the perfectly timed punch-line and the stiletto-style riposte is matched only by his compassion, humour and courage.”

Funds raised are for The Darling Trust which was established in August 2003 by founding member, former trustee and present patron, Pieter-Dirk Uys. Pieter-Dirk is involved in many HIV/AIDS projects and takes his AIDS-awareness presentation called ‘For Facts Sake’ to schools throughout South Africa at his own cost. The project is self-funded by Uys with no sponsorship or subsidy from private or public sectors, including The Darling Trust.

The Darling Trust was set up to assist the previously disadvantaged communities of Darling. The aim is to empower individual to help themselves, mainly through participation in the sectors of education, Skills development and health.
