FEBRUARY 2010

Wow its February already let’s make the most of it! January seems to have gone past in a flash.
Exciting times for South Africa this year...
Our cricketers are in India; Rugby Super 14 about to start; Carlos Parreira honing Bafana to do us proud in the World Cup. The spectacular stadium in Green Point already feels like an important part of Cape Town’s sporting life.
Buitenverwachting’s Harvest is in full swing and by all accounts it will be a good one...

The Restaurant

Sunday 14th February
‘today we celebrate your love’

Buitenverwachting Restaurant is definitely the place to be with your loved one on this auspicious day. Not usually open on a Sunday, our staff will be pulling out all the stops to make this a memorable experience for our guests.

Talented Chef/Patron Edgar Osojnik has created a superb menu for the lovers amongst us. A glass of bubbly each on arrival; the ladies will receive a beautiful rose and each couple will receive a mini sacher torte.

A word from Lars

“We consider ourselves lucky, as the November storms did not cause much wind damage in our vines. Flowering was affected and we expect a smaller crop in 2010. The long and cold winter indicates strong reserves in the vines and great fruit quality.

Our annual nervousness is building up towards the harvest. Special harvest T-Shirts have been made from moisture management fabric have been handed out to our staff and we all feel like the race horses before the J&B Met! Hold thumbs.”

Meet Justin

Your scribe is going to introduce you to some of the important people behind the scenes at Buitenverwachting.

Head Chef, Justin Pillay is Edgar’s right hand man. He was apprenticed to Edgar in 2000 and attended The Culinary Academy, a first class school started by the talented Chef, Elsa van der Nest. He passed with flying colours and it wasn’t long before he was appointed Chef de Partie at Buitenverwachting. He was promoted to Head Chef at the Gourmet Festival in 2009.

Justin says that Edgar has been an inspirational mentor and that his encouragement has been a great motivation to excel.

Good at all aspects of cuisine his special love is for the Pastry Kitchen. “I love the creative feeling about it the only limitation is one’s imagination!” says Justin. He has spent time cooking at the 3 Michelin starred van Dome restaurant in Germany and also participated in the Davidoff Gourmet Festival in Sylt, Germany in 2002.

Recently married he is planning to spend many more years at Edgar’s side in the Restaurant at Buitenverwachting.

Buitenverwachting is our long time favourite. It was as good as ever on 6 Jan. Excellent, varied food & plenty for 2 in a basket. Beautiful location & very relaxed atmosphere. Wherever you choose you will need to make a reservation.

Ilze’s Cellar Door News

The Buitenverwachting Chardonnay has been sold out for many a month...

Ilze is pleased to tell you that the 2009 vintage has just been released.

The Chardonnay was 10 months in barrels. To achieve the best possible balance between wood and fruit aromas, 1/3 of the unwooded Chardonnay is usually reserved and blended with the Chardonnay from the barrel. The 2009 vintage was very bold and intense so that the unwooded Chardonnay did not offer any improvement.

This is the first time we have a 100% wood fermented and matured Chardonnay. The wine is bold and very expressive and definitely one of the best we have ever made.

Ilze invites you pop in and taste?

The price has been held at R95.00 per bottle - R 570.00 (for a case of 6).
