MARCH 2010

Constantia is coming into Autumn which is such a beautiful time.

True happiness is the full use of your powers along lines of excellence in a life affording scope.
- John F Kennedy

A word from Lars

“Our Sauvignon Blanc harvest has been delayed into March and the crop is down by approximately 30%.

From a quality perspective this is great news, as slow ripening translates into physiologically ripe grapes showing elegant and rich yellow fruit characters.

The 2009 vintage was exceptional and 2010 looks hugely promising as well.”

Meet Etienne

It is Buitenverwachting Restaurant’s privilege to have Etienne Francois Borman as their Restaurant Manager. A born and bred Capetonian his name bears testimony to his French roots. It seems that his intuitive feel for food and wine is born and bred.

A qualified financier, he worked as an accountant for a little over a year and was not a happy camper. He took off for London where he worked as a waiter whilst deciding what to do with his life ... he loved the buzz; he loved the people; he loved the food and has been in the hospitality business ever since.

His choice of restaurants to work for has always been CV driven and after working for some of the top eateries in London we are delighted that he chose Buitenverwachting to join when deciding to return to the Cape.

Etienne says, “this gem is one of the best in South Africa and to work with one of the top Chefs, certainly one of the best I have ever worked with, is inspiring!”

Favourite dishes on the menu are Caesar Salad as a starter, Springbok with Foie Gras as a main and the Yoghurt Crème Catalan with poached Rhubarb to follow. He loves to quaff the Hussey’s Vlei Sauvignon Blanc, with Christine his favourite red. Another favourite is the Eben Sadie - Palladius. He lives in the Restaurant Manager’s Cottage on the slopes of the Constantiaberg in Hussey’s Vlei which is sheer bliss after 11 years of London’s constant rush!

His philosophy in life is to be happy every single day and it shows ...

Ilze’s Cellar Door News

A reminder that our Tasting Room is open:

Monday to Friday from 10h00 to 17h00

Saturday 10h00 to 15h00

Yes we know that many tasting rooms are open on Sundays and we are not but we have a comprehensive staff policy where our workers have a village and family life is encouraged. Our Manager Lars Maack is of the philosophy that it is very important for families to have a day of leisure and/or worship together. More on this soon... It works for us!

Please accept our apologies if it is an inconvenience to you... we will more than make up for it when you visit!

The Chardonnay is selling out fast.

Both the 2009 Sauvignon Blanc’s are excellent, you’re welcome to join us for a tasting.

Swiss Air has chosen Buitenverwachting’s Sauvignon Blanc 2009 for their Premier Wine List. (A nice pat on the back for our winemakers).

Winzer Platters are available at the Cellar Door served on a wooden board with a selection of cheeses, cold cuts (kudu/schwarzwald bacon/salami), pickles, grapes, nuts, landbrot and served with rye bread. These tasty platters are proving extremely popular and are great value at R75.
